چکیده

k Abstract. We give an AC 0 upper bound on the complexity of rst-oder queries over (innnite) databases deened by restricted linear constraints. This result enables us to deduce the non-expressibility of various usual queries, such as the parity of the cardinality of a set or the connectivity of a graph in rst-order logic with linear constraints over the reals.

Descriptive Complexity Theory for ConstraintDatabasesErich

We consider the data complexity of various logics on two important classes of constraint databases: dense order and linear constraint databases. For dense order databases, we present a general result allowing us to lift results on logics capturing complexity classes from the class of nite ordered databases to dense order constraint databases. Considering linear constraints, we show that there i...

First-Order Languages Expressing Constructible Spatial Database Queries

The research presented in this paper is situated in the framework of constraint databases that was introduced by Kanellakis, Kuper, and Revesz in their seminal paper of 1990. Constraint databases and query languages are defined using real polynomial constraints. As a consequence of a classical result by Tarski, first-order queries in the constraint database model are effectively computable, and...

MLPQ: A Linear Constraint Database System with Aggregate Operators

This paper describes the MLPQ constraint database system. The query language of MLPQ is SQL extended with linear arithmetic constraints. The input and output databases are Linear Constraint Databases (LCDBs). An important feature of the MLPQ system is that it can handle aggregate operators, Min, Max, Sum, Avg, etc. In MLPQ, these operators are evaluated for a series of linear programming (LP) p...

Queries with Arithmetical Constraints

This paper is dedicated to Paris Kanellakis who initiated the eld of constraint databases, and deeply innuenced our work. Abstract In this paper, we study the expressive power and the complexity of rst-order logic with arithmetic, as a query language over relational and constraint databases. We rst consider the data complexity of rst-order queries. We prove in particular that linear queries can...

Computing Queries on Linear Constraint Databases

We consider rational linear constraint databases, and study the problem of evaluating e ciently rstorder queries with linear constraints. We show that although queries admit low data complexity (NC), their naive evaluation is rather ine cient. The computation paradigm is based on relational algebra and constraint solving. We focus on the former, and show that the query processing should di er d...

The Constraint Database Framework: Lessons Learned from CQA/CDB

This paper reflects our experience with CQA/CDB, a prototype rational linear constraint database. First, we show that the standard semantics of constraint databases lead to an anomaly when queried in the presence of missing attributes. In CQA/CDB, this anomaly is avoided by enriching the CDB relational schema, resulting in heterogenous databases. Then, we present spatial databases as a special ...
